If you have granite countertops you know they are fairly easy to care for. They are easy to clean and don’t show a lot of dirt or stains.
One of the only things you need to do to your granite besides cleaning it is sealing the granite occasionally.
You can pay someone to reseal your granite for you or you can spend around $20 and seal it yourself. To seal granite countertops will take about 30 minutes of your time, plus it will protect them from stains.

To seal your granite countertops you will need a few things. You can buy a granite sealer at the hardware stores or just pick it up on Amazon.
Almost everything else you probably already have at home. Before you buy your granite sealer you may want to check if it needs to be sealed by using the water test.

- Vinegar
- Dawn Soap
- Granite Sealer
Granite Water Test
If you are wondering if sealing granite really necessary then try the granite water test.
Place a few drops of water on your granite in some of the most used areas. Then, set a timer for about 15 minutes.
After 15 minutes check to see if the water is still there.
If the water has disappeared it means it is time to reseal your granite. If the water is still there that means your seal is still good.

Deep Clean First
Before you get started sealing your countertops you will want to give them a good deep clean first.
Anything that is on your counters will get sealed in if you don’t remove it. I recommend using a microfiber cloth and dawn soap to really clean your countertops.
Remove Any Stains
You will also want to make sure you remove any stains so you don’t lock them into the granite.
Hard water stains are usually pretty easy to remove. You can follow my favorite tip to remove hard water stains from granite.
Resealing Granite
Now that you have your countertops clean and free from stains you can get started on sealing the granite.
Depending on what brand of granite sealer you use you may have different directions. so I am sharing the best application process using their sealer.
To start, you will want to work in small areas. I like to work with 2-3 feet of granite at a time.
Spray the granite sealer over about 3 feet of the granite. Then, use a microfiber cloth to lightly spread it over the area.
You don’t want to rub it in all the way, just spread the sealer across the 3 feet of countertop. Then, let it sit for around two minutes.
After two minutes take a second dry microfiber cloth and dry the countertop working in a circular motion.
Continue working your way around your countertop spreading the granite sealer until your whole counter is finished.
Give the sealer 1 hour to completely set before you start using your countertops again.

Repeat If Necessary
If it has been a while since you sealed your countertops you may want to seal them for a second time.
To see if they need a second coat try the granite water test again. Follow the instructions again to give a second coat if necessary.
How Often Should You Seal Granite Countertops?
If you want to prevent staining and take care of your granite you should be regularly sealing your countertops.
How often is dependant on how much use your countertops get. Most places recommend resealing granite countertops every 2-3 months.
You can put a reminder on your phone to do a water check every few months. This will make sure your countertops stay well protected from stains.
